About Butterfish

Butterfish was founded by Rutherford local Sherif Salib, who has over 10 years of restaurant experience. He partnered with Chef Jeffry Undiarto to bring world-class sushi to Bergen County — filling a gap in Rutherford's dining scene that leaned heavily toward Italian.

The space took three years to build — including a full year of construction to transform a former dentist's office into a 1,000-square-foot dining room with custom booths, wall art, and a black marble feature wall. The restaurant soft-launched November 15 and held its grand opening December 6.

Chef Jeffry Undiarto

Chef Jeffry Undiarto is the culinary force behind Butterfish's menus. His background includes a tenure at n/naka — a two-Michelin-starred restaurant in Los Angeles led by chef Niki Nakayama. He also co-founded Iki Ramen in Koreatown (2018) and is associated with Iki Nori Sushi on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Undiarto sources fresh fish daily from Japan, Boston, and top US suppliers, keeping minimal kitchen storage to prioritize quality.
